The Geography curriculum provides a knowledge rich foundation for children's discovery and curiosity about our people and places. The sequenced lessons provide an in-depth exploration of social and environmental geographical knowledge.
By developing specific geographical skills, children make sense of our own surroundings through learning about our own local area, rural, coastal and urban, asking geographical questions and comparing their locality with that of other regions in the United Kingdom and in the rest of the world. Through their growing knowledge and understanding of human and physical geography, children gain an appreciation of life in other cultures.
Our Geography curriculum aims to inspire children to think about their own place in the world, developing their character and a sense of responsibility towards the environment, along with a core understanding of the human impact on the natural world. This is reflected by our work in Cultivating Futures, where the children develop a productive, action-based approach to learning about our environment. For example, the children engage in beach cleaning in order to develop their understanding of our coastal environment, along with learning about Connor Downs Academy's renewable resource systems, such as our solar panels and rainwater harvesting irrigation system. Through this developmental approach, the children gain a knowledge rich understanding of the complexity of our environments, developing their character and sense of responsibility relating to how we can work together to build a positive healthy world for us all.
